GEO — Generative Engine Optimization — is the practice of getting your content cited, quoted or summarized correctly when someone asks ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, or Perplexity a question instead of typing a search query. If you're new to the term, start with our explainer on what GEO actually means. This guide covers the tools worth using once you understand the basics.
The picks
Profound
Built specifically to answer "does ChatGPT mention us, and what does it say?" — it monitors your brand's presence across major AI answer engines the way a rank tracker monitors Google positions. The closest thing to a category leader right now, and priced accordingly.

If you're already paying for Semrush's core SEO plan, its AI visibility add-on covers the basics — tracking whether your pages get cited in AI Overviews — without a separate subscription. Less depth than a dedicated GEO tool, but a reasonable starting point.

Before buying anything: ask ChatGPT and Perplexity the exact questions your customers would ask, and see whether your site gets cited. This costs nothing, takes twenty minutes, and tells you more about where you actually stand than a dashboard will at first.
What actually moves the needle
Across the tools and the underlying research, a few things show up repeatedly: clear, direct answers near the top of a page beat buried ones; content that states specific facts and numbers gets quoted more than vague claims; and pages that already rank well in classic search tend to also get cited in AI answers, so GEO is additive to SEO rather than a replacement for it. See our SEO tools guide for the foundation this builds on.
How to choose
If AI-answer visibility is core to your business — you're a SaaS company or publisher watching organic traffic shift — a dedicated tracker like Profound earns its price. If you're already invested in Semrush, use its AI toolkit first and see if the gap in visibility is even large enough to justify more spend. Everyone should start with the free manual test regardless.
