The verdict
- Best for
- Optimizing individual drafts against top-ranking competitors for a keyword
- Price
- From $99/month
- Standout
- Content score updates live as you write, with specific terms to add
- Watch for
- Doesn't replace a full SEO platform — no rank tracking or site audits
Surfer SEO does one job and does it well: it looks at what's currently ranking for a keyword, and tells you what your draft is missing to compete. It's not trying to be Semrush — there's no backlink explorer, no technical site audit — and that focus shows in how sharp the one thing it does actually is.
What it's like to use
You give it a target keyword, and it pulls the current top-ranking pages, builds a content outline and term list from them, then scores your draft live as you write or paste text in. The score updates fast enough that it feels like a spellchecker rather than a report you generate and wait for.
It pairs naturally with an AI writing tool — draft in one tab, check the score in the other — rather than replacing the drafting step itself, though it does have a basic AI writer built in if you want to stay in one place.
Where it falls short
Because it's narrow by design, you'll still need something else for keyword research at scale, rank tracking, and technical audits. Teams that want all of that in one subscription tend to end up at Semrush instead, sometimes running both.

Frequently asked questions
Surfer SEO or Semrush?
Different scope. Surfer is sharper for scoring an individual draft; Semrush covers research, audits and tracking too. See our Semrush review and SEO tools guide for the full comparison.
Does a high content score guarantee a ranking?
No — it correlates with what's currently ranking, not a guarantee. Treat it as a checklist, not the whole strategy.
Is there a free trial?
Surfer offers a limited trial period rather than an ongoing free tier.
